Café Café, KL

Who would have thought that after travelling the world so extensively, we would be able to sample a little bit of Paris at the corner of what used to be called Birch Road, now renamed (like everything else in Malaysia) after his nemesis, Maharajalela. Locating the restaurant is not that easy. Hint: Look for the shop at the end of the road with the black facade, reminiscent of a dark worshipper’s temple.

The restaurant is a paradox of looks, both opulent and rustic at the same time.

Chandeliers suspended from the high ceilings, crystals reflecting the sparse lighting seemingly floating in mid-air, a curtain of glass beads providing bare privacy, melting candles and gargantuan flower arrangements greeted us, while a wisp of light forged the way to our seats beside huge windows covered by dark, heavy curtains.

Dinner consisted of escargots, foie gras, mushroom soup, duck confit and wagyu beef cheek. My baked escargots in a lovely buttery garlic sauce was exquisite; the soup was a fresh, albeit light mushroom soup with a strong peppery taste; and the duck confit was well-browned and crisp on the outside, while the meat was gelatinous, tender and bursting with flavour due to the several hours of cooking in fat. The wagyu beef cheek, on the other hand, was tender and buttery.

Desserts were lovely. My tiramisu with its creamy mascarpone cheese came doused in french brandy and was utterly decadent. Bald Eagle had a rich chocolate cake filled with peanut butter and it came served with a skinny candle pierced into it, burning merrily away as I softly sang him a birthday song.

  1. Nice little mirror post you have there – light butterfish/dark beef wagyu – hmm – you are a secret poet at heart you know 😉 Nice candle and happy b script on that plate – you are really sweet. (sang softly did you?)

  2. hmmmm we are so jealous now. 🙂 We were at cafeCAFE last saturday to celebrate Sunny Yaw’s birthday but he did not even get his birthday candle. hehehehehe…… Anyway I had prawns and scallop for starter and wagyu for main. Mine was fantastic! Sunny Yaw had escargot and he demanded one of the most expensive main, the pan-fried beef. All of us skip dessert……
Very well recommended. But if you want to fill up for tummy, than this not the place to be as the portion is small. Fine Dining.

  3. awww man so romantic and lovely. glad you guys have a great time and oh my, i lurrveee Bald Eagle’s shirt!!!

  4. the wagyu beef compared to max!? its hard isnt..the in cafe cafe is just so delicate and tiny.. luved this place..no more food pics?

  5. Hmmm….My birthday is in Dec while Hubby’s in March. But i guess no need excuse to dine here hor? Hehehe…i wanna go try their escargots which is my fav. YUmmsss….ok…anniversary coming in September..WOOOHOOO!!! Eh…it’s October!!

  6. msiagirl:

Aah, you tease! How can my “poetry” compare to the stuff that you litbloggers spew out?

    big boys oven:

The thing is to tell management that you’re celebrating someone’s birthday. 🙂 Happy belated birthday to Sunny, btw! I think I shall try the pan-fried beef that Sunny had next time. I’m sure it’s delicious like everything else in the restaurant.

    jason:

Romantic and shweet, you say? Thanks dear.

    babe_kl:

Bald Eagle will be happy to hear that. He’s quite the metrosexual guy!

    nipples:

Wagyu beef cheek was pretty good, actually, although I only got a bite since it was Bald Eagle’s main course. Hard to take food pics, man. It was too dark to shoot without a flash, and my flash caused my pics to be overexposed. Even photoshop couldn’t help. 🙁

    precious pea:

Methinks the sight of good food has made you delirious. Thank goodness wedding rings have dates engraved on them to help people like you remember your anniversaries. hehehehe.

  7. how lovely. seems like a nice place for a romantic dinner. i like the chocolate cake set up. and maaan! peanut butter filling..no waaay!…

  8. celebrated fiance’s birthday here too… hmmmmm i miss this place but seriously, can’t be dining here often… pk man! but.. for sure, i love this place, love da food, love da desserts! see i am lucky enough to be here again on my birthday ekekekekeke…. anyways, happy belated birthday to your hubby! 😀

  9. wokandspoon:

It was rather large. I had trouble finishing it! Good thing Bald Eagle has a bigger appetite. 🙂

    ra°:

you like peanut butter too? ^5!

    meiyen:

I was inspired by your blog la! The place is nice and romantic without being overly pretentious.

  10. uhhh, parisien cafes!

lookin at their interiors, very parisien indeed accept that the ceiling is abit too high…lol.so bohemien huh? well. if they dint play parisien cafe music, i wont go…kakaka!

i had duck confit salade all the time when i was in the porte d’orleon area in paris, so nostalgic!! the last time i had was hours before leaving for CDG, sitting externally with a plastic curtain to contain the heat…..eating alone…sob! mainly because, there were so many couples dining inside it was a nuisance of me…lol

  11. xiu long bao:

haha! depends on what you want. For a romantic time, Cafe2 is definitely the place to go to. I still think Banquet’s more suitable when you want to meet up with your girlfriends for a nice lunch together. 😛 Thus speaketh the President!

    unkaleong:

no problem. my fees are very reasonable. 😛

    k.t.x:

Paris alone is not acceptable! I should know since I went to Paris by myself too…solo traveller terumbang ambing di English Channel. hahaha. It’s no fun eating duck confit alone, is it? Despite that, you seem to have some nice memories of Paris. Tell me some stories one day, k. 🙂

  12. Im so jealous… im also yr husband and my birthday is on 22 Aug, ok? Please remember this important date. I dun mind escargot, but i can’t take beef.. I might like to explore their chicken dishes… ok? Thx.. i wan my birthday to be exactly the same too

  13. dear me..why nipples now eh??… i had the beef cheeks the last time as well..it was just delicious!..

  14. jackson suamiku:

my bday is on Aug 27. Bald Eagle is getting me a camera. Since you are my husband, you should also get me a camera. I want a DSLR model. I want my birthday to be exactly the same. 😛

    nipples:

Nipples sounds good on you, dear. Next time, I shall try the wagyu beef cheeks since the mouthful that I sampled off Bald Eagle’s plate wasn’t enough for me!

  15. Dear LL,

“If I were Lyrical Lemongrass’s pear-shaped sister, I’d like to be called Fattest Bottom Lemongrass.” I am sure LL would love to have you as a virtual sister, just like me. I will let LL know your comment…. 

I am passing on Argus’ comment.

p/s I like Bald Eagle’s white long sleeve shirt, especially the buttons.

  16. Hey, Lyrical. I just had to pop over here after seeing your comment on my blog. Dear MrsHBT is trying to get us ‘related’.

Wow, what a great dinner! I believe Cafe Cafe is started/owned by a couple of fashion designers? Vaguely remember…

What is ‘beef cheeks’? You mean they cut the cheeks off a cow’s head?!

  17. Prefer this kind of chandeliers to the very “chinese” chandeliers that are always too obiang :O

So romantic, I don’t think I even had a candlelight dinner before…oh…so deprived right?

  18. looks elegantly gentle & simply romantic though a bit silent maybe both of u are reminising of those quite sensuous days & nights 368 nights ago where ….( at least we thoz this round you will show a little bit more of your as-yet incomplete luscious silhoutte ( bashful laugh hehe )

  19. After all these great food, I want to know about the “other” part of your celebration….oh, wait….it’s okay, you can leave out the “details”. ROFL…

  20. lee ping:

Hahaha. That’s quite funny. 🙂 Oh, and I’ll be sure to pass on your remark to Bald Eagle. 🙂

    argus lou:

hi…nice of you to drop by, dear fattest bottom lemongrass. 😛 But I’m afraid I’d have to take the honours for that description…hehe.

    tigerfish:

how come no candlelight dinner wan? Next time you set it up la. Of course, he’d probably ask you if the power got cut. hehe.

    jason:

Hehe. We love taking jibes at each other. 🙂

    bsg:

ei? where’s the “team”? looks like you and your “team” will need to have some reminiscing of those quite sensuous days and nights 368 hours ago in Pulau Pinang eating asam laksa and sister’s char koay teow. And the silhouette? haha…too scary to put up la.

    wmw:

err, why u wanna know abt the “other part” wan? 😛 Come come, i recommend some good “movies” to you, k. 😉

  21. goodness, jackson, you, my boiboi and i should celebrate our birthdays besar-besaran cos my boiboi’s on 24th Aug and mine is 25th!!!
