The Last Polka Ice Cream

The Last Polka

Here’s some useless trivia.  Bald Eagle used to develop and sell ice cream and I was his guinea pig.  Thankfully, I’ve lived to tell my tale.   It was a looooong time ago, but he still proclaims to be a connoisseur of sorts.   I’m not one to dispute that, seeing that I’m married to him and all, but I do think that my loyalty to him (and his excellent taste) is not totally misplaced.   As a result of his history in the ice cream business and his affinity to this creamy concoction, it is not surprising that we frequently end our meal at home with a scoop or two of good ice cream or gelato.

Here’s some more useless trivia.   I do some of my best thinking in the toilet.   There’s sufficient literature in my toilet to ensure that my time is not wasted, and the materials range from cookbooks (yes, really) to magazines.   So during one of my inspired moments, I was reading KLue, and voila, an article on The Last Polka stared me in the face.   Women, I must insist, are excellent at multitasking and compartmentalising, so I had no qualms drooling over its description while depositing my own…err…confectionary.

I had to make contact.

And thus began my relationship with the ladies behind The Last Polka, with SMSes on random meeting places and hints of thong appreciation. May Yee and Ee Vee’s business is an online one and their ice cream can be picked up from various pre-determined locations around KL.  I’d get texts from Ee Vee saying – meet me at J&R at 10.00am – seemingly covert in nature, but with such precious goods, one cannot be too careful.

The Last Polka‘s strength lies, not in the marketing aspect of its products, but in its contents.   Its simple spiel is this: “If you’re looking for great tasting homemade ice cream in Kuala Lumpur, you’ve come to the right place. Made with 100% natural ingredients, we combine our creamy French-style ice cream with the regional Asian flavours we love.” The ice cream is free of preservatives, and thus has a shorter life span.  The texture is creamy with little air.   I’d stake my reputation on the Horlicks ice cream, the most addictive wonderful tasting drool-worthy ice cream in the world and currently my favourite flavour in The Last Polka‘s limited range of offerings.   There is also Malt and Peanut Butter which is great if you prefer something less intense in flavour.   The Mango ice cream is the current best seller, and they also have White Coffee, Green Tea and Black Sesame.

The ice cream retails at RM23 for a 500ml tub and RM35 for a 800ml tub.   To make your order, hop over to The Last Polka.  Don’t forget to bring a freezer bag/box when you eventually pick up the goods as the ice cream tends to melt easily.

  1. ok, now the comment proper .. oh i totally feel u when u say..
I’m not one to dispute that, seeing that I’m married to him and all!! don’t they all think they are connoisseurs of sorts ?!! teehee .. so cute la u.. and BE too. tell him he’s really the coolest.. i am just imagining a big macho guy like him stirring the cream (That is how u make icecream innit?LOL)

of course by default, you r cool too. u picked him 😛

  2. ahhh i had been wondering about this mysterious enterprise! especially cos they had no address or even contact number on their website. but there’s one more mystery unsolved: what’s the deal with their name???

  3. ciki: Yes. 😛

ciki: Well, technically he was the one barking the orders and the rest was all automated. 😛 If BE made ice cream himself, you’d find his bulu in the ice cream too. heehee! Yes, I’m cool. So are you!

Sean: Yeah, I initially had suspicions about the website too! The name is taken from a song title from the band, Ben Folds Five. May loved the song when the album first came out and thought it would be a cool name for a venture. She bought and reserved the domain name, and the rest is history.

gfad: No! No! I believe you were talking to ciki.

fatboybakes: it will come lar. maybe can arrange some for an impending pool party, eh? 😉 as for sitting on the throne, just coz i don’t tweet from the throne doesn’t mean that I don’t use it!

J: hehehe. Yes, the ice cream is delicious. You gotta try it some day!

  4. How clandestine. But for ice-cream anything pun boleh. 😉

And I like the twinity between GFAD’s toilet humour in her comment on my post and your own toilet ruminations. Sisters of a feather, go to toilet together? Er, not quite right also… 😛

  5. See, that’s why we are friends. You don’t get flummoxed when I give strange post-unrelated comments. You just accept it, and to me, that’s a sign of a good friend. 🙂

Anyway, it’s word association. And my brain works way faster than my fingers..
Polka = ‘it was an itsy-bitsy teeny-weeny yellow polka dot bikini = some chat eons ago about holidays and bikinis.

I’ve only ever had peanut ice-cream once in my entire life and til today I can still remember it – just like smooth, light and creamy PB. Funny how no brands have peanut flavour ice cream. If you are ordering in August, I’d like to tumpang Horlicks (for him, because I cannot for life of me make Horlicks like how Johan, his fave mamak makes it..) and PB please.

*reminds self to discreetly carry a bottle of lysol whenever she reads books in/from LL’s household*

  6. LFB: what twinity? ya, just saw your blog and gfad’s comment. what can i say mon…oceans and mountains may separate us (me and gfad), but we’ll always be one. or something liddat.

gfad: how to get flummoxed when you’re always springing unexpected words of wisdom? yeah, i knew you were inferring to the itsy bitsy bla bla bla bikini, but no, i don’t own one for obvious reasons. Eh how to carry back ice cream all the way? Oh ya, can hor. Just like how we bring back frozen tiger prawns from Sabah, right? The worst thing in my possession that you can touch is the newspapers, coz it goes through a double toilet dosage – mine and BE’s. hahaha.

  7. Mon, the only good way to carry ice cream back is in the stomach. 😀

I was having a porky meal at Brahaus the other day. It being a beautiful sunny but cool day, we decided to sit outdoors as it had a pool view. Bad mistake. A woman was sunbathing almost in front of us. No, hubs was not enthralled by her. Good news is, she’s old. Bad new is, she’s old. And unfortunately not defying gravity either. Whatever that used to be perkily up, had all come sadly, saggily down. I had to pack half of our pork knuckles home.

Good news is, I think I get away with wearing a bikini.. ^_^ You should try it. 😀

  8. gfad: You’re so confusing me. So your mon is coming here to eat, izzit? Ah so, coz I’d rather not hear of your regurgitating skills. 😀

I’m surprised that these women haven’t heard of one piece suits. Covers up all the bits and more. You should try it. 😀 LOL. Kidding. You’re young and you’re sexy…no need to cover anything. As for me, young lass…I’m past my prime.

  9. Munkeyboy: It’s never too late to start now (didn’t you read Kenny Mah’s latest blogpost?). hehe. Aiyoh, these are really sweet girls lah. Please don’t go scare them with your munkey antics. 😀

  10. Mon, Munky is adorable. They will luuuurve him! And ply him with loads of icy goodies. P’haps a PB-banana flavour?

And mon, 40s is the new 30s. Last I saw, you were still defying gravity.. ^_^

  11. gfad: Yes, he is. I adore him too. Oh yes, I’m sure he’ll love hte PB flavoured one. No banana, though. I’ve always felt that banana flavoured confections are the hardest to master. I’ve tasted too many foul tasting banana-flavoured drinks/icecream/milkshakes/etc. Thanks for your vote of confidence re my gravity defying skills. Unfortunately, gravity loves me as I can’t even jump 2 feet up.

Munkeyboy: Of course you’re a nice monkey. hehe. A nice monkey who will scare the shit out of all his competitors!

  12. actually hor, the ice cream is cheap. i’ve made ice cream before, and the cost involved are astronomical, assuming you use good stuff. i can understand why good ice cream costs the sky.
i’m bored, that would explain why i am back here commenting AGAIN.

  13. babe_kl: It’s not purely PB. There’s malt in it too, so it’s less strong.

    Paps: LOL. We’re cursed.

    wyyv: Thanks for dropping by!

Cheng Yi: Glad you think of me when you’re bored. Yes, I agree with you on the price. You get what you pay for.

Bangsar-bAbE: No, not greedy! I want them all too! 😀

  14. Hi,
Just want to drop a note to say that I read an article “Surfing for food” on Msia Airlines’ Going Places magazine today and saw write up about your blog. Congratulations … same goes to A Little Fat Monkey.

  15. Hi guys, thanks for all the comments 🙂 As for the questions, looks like Lyrical Lemongrass has done an awesome job of answering them (down to the origin of our name)! PS. how’d you know??

Re: clandestine/random deliveries, we’re going to try and sort out more permanent digs once I move into a semi-commercial space next month. Hope that helps?

Re: irregular schedule — we apologise for this. We get orders of varying sizes and while we try to accommodate all of it with a proper process, we’re still pretty DIY and working with a limited production capacity. I know it can get a bit annoying, but that’s something we’re going to improve in the next couple of months!

Thank you all again for your support and patience. We still get a huge buzz from new people trying/liking our ice cream, and we appreciate every single sentiment.

PS. We’re going to try and have a tasting party sometime in May/June for new flavours. All ye who would like to gorge, drop us an email at icecream@thelastpolka.com with the subject “LEMME EAT!” — we’ll be in touch 🙂

  16. sawleng: Thanks for dropping by! Hope you’ve enjoyed reading. 🙂

    via: definitely!

    Munkeyboy: hahaha, mutual fanclub!

May Yee: Ee Vee kindly provided me with the answers after I frantically SMSed her when I received the queries. 😀 Yes, moving to a permanent location helps, but I don’t mind the random locations for now since you offer some sort of flexibility. Yay, looking forward to your tasting party! Thank you!

  17. Oh so THIS is the one! Gosh, I completely forgot about this. Okay, so I can make my own order instead. Thanks … 🙂
I’d double that stakes, for Horlicks flavoured ice-cream can’t go wrong!

  18. J2Kfm: I can order for you too…just lemme know when you’re down next lah!

Munkey: I’m sure they’ll love you! (as long as they don’t read your earlier threats above!)

Frat Mustard: Yeah, we’re all deprived of conversation.

  19. Home-made ice cream!! I WANT!!!! Just had the Haagan-Dazs ice cream & I was happy! The one home-made ice cream that left me ‘high’ was from the pasar malam at Cameron Highlands! Can u believe it? Their rum & raisins flavour and the brandy flavour ice-cream ROCKS!!! I wanna try this Last Polka ice cream tooooo……….. *drools like crazee* 😀

  20. Perutbesi: I like Haagen Dazs too! Isn’t it nice to find great stuff in the unlikeliest of places?? Wah, rum and raisin and brandy somemore! Must go there with ice boxes and dry ice to bring back the ice cream man! You can try The Last Polka’s ice cream. Just follow the instructions left by May Yee in the comments above!

  21. Good to see that local ice cream makers are coming up with new flavours! Something to look forward to, definitely.

Here’s more trivia – People ask why I don’t share my magazines and smart phone. Simple. I just tell them that these items join me in the toilet. And they never asked again. Ever.

  22. Hairy: SG still has a lot more variety, and you guys are spoilt for choice! Hmmmm….didn’t you just offer to loan me all your Time Out SG mags? NO THANK YOU.

superwilson: Wow, you’ve just turned guinea pig into a verb! FML

  23. I’ll go for the Horlicks one! That’s such a ingenuous choice of local flavour 🙂
Oh yes, I have cookbooks in my throne room, too! *wink* While depositing confectionary & what-nots, that’s the best time to think of new things to try, ya?

  24. Pureglutton: Well, if you turn up for a certain event soon *wink*, you’ll get to try some. Alternatively, drop an email to May Yee (see comments above) to be invited for a free tasting session. Oooh, I must visit your throne room soon to get some new recipe ideas! ROFL.
