Sunday Discovery at Chynna, KL Hilton

chynna
Today, Chynna introduced a special dinner menu called Sunday Discovery. The menu lists out certain dim sum and à la carte dinner items at half portions (equivalent to half price). This is especially wonderful news for people like me as I normally dine with smaller groups (translated: 2 people) on weekends. It is also good strategy on the part of Chynna which recognises that the crowd is the smallest on Sundays and this new promotion will thus encourage more people, especially couples, to dine out on a Sunday night.chynna
Chynna serves Cantonese style cuisine which has been somewhat Malaysianised to suit local tastebuds. As such, a number of the dishes can be rather spicy.

fried cod with thousand island sauce
Having tried their dim sum before, we decided to try the other items on the à la carte Sunday Discovery menu. The crispy canadian cod fish with chilled icelandic sauce was actually fish fillets, deep fried, and then tossed in a thousand island sauce. What I liked about the sauce was the fact that it was rather crunchy due to the addition of finely chopped celery and garlic. Minced chilli added some oomph to the sauce and made it very tasty. I understand why cod is better served deep fried, as it is impossible to get fresh cod here, but the texture of the flesh loses its smoothness when it is deep fried. The assistant manager of Chynna, however, assured us that if we wanted it steamed, Chynna had a claypot steamed version of cod which was quite good.

claypot chicken

claypot chicken
We liked the stewed claypot chicken with peanuts in XO sauce and garlic. The sauce, in this instance was rather smooth and garlicky, albeit a little mild in flavour, and the chicken pieces had fully absorbed the flavours of the sauce.

scallops with hongkong kailan
The dish of stir-fried Australian scallops in XO sauce was originally supposed to be served with broccoli, but they had run out of broccoli and offered us a replacement of Hong Kong kailan instead. Feeling quite accommodating that evening, we agreed. The Bald Eagle thought the kailan was nice and crunchy but I found it a little overcooked. The scallops and mushrooms went well with the XO sauce which was apparently the chef’s secret recipe. I liked the fact that the XO sauce had identifiable pieces of shredded dried scallops, dried prawns, garlic and chilli.

Mint lamb
What was undoubtedly the best dish of the evening for me was the sautéed sliced lamb. Soft, tender and smooth (or in the words of the Bald Eagle, melt-in-your-mouth), the lamb did not have the strong smell that is normally associated with lamb/mutton. The sauce complemented the lamb perfectly – made of mint leaves, garlic, onions and chillies, it had the right amount of spiciness without overpowering the rest of the flavours. Sprinkled with sesame seeds, this dish was perfect.

fried seafood noodles
The fried noodles dish with scallops and prawns was very good and sufficiently charred. At RM20, it was good value.

The entire meal came up to approximately RM160 (before Diamond privilege discounts!). The most expensive dishes were the cod fish and scallop with kailan at RM32 each.

I love the ambience at Chynna and we were served by knowledgeable, articulate and attentive waiters. What a wonderful end to the weekend!

30 minutes to lunchtime.

Have you ever felt tired of eating? Like you wanted to take a break from gluttony? To go back to the simple life (sans Paris Hilton)? Half an hour to lunchtime today, I looked at the wishlist on my blog, and *gasp* turned away. I contemplated skipping lunch.

20 minutes to lunchtime.

Barbie scooted over to my room. “What’s for lunch today?”

“Dunno. I’m tired of eating”, I wrinkled my face, my tongue sticking out to one side like a sick cow.

Barbie looked at me incredulously. “How can you be tired of eating?”

I understood where she was coming from. Anyone who knows me well enough will know two things about me: 1. I have a missing patch of hair on my head due to a hairstyling disaster, and 2. I never skip lunch. Dinner, yes, but never lunch.

10 minutes to lunchtime.

My stomach growled. I looked at Barbie wide-eyed. Barbie looked at me. “Did you hear that?”

3…2…1….

The conversations happening between (T – 30) and (T) were erased from my mind. I was starving and ready to eat. I grabbed my car keys.

Despite changing my mind about having lunch, I wanted to eat something simple. And what could be simpler, and more satisfying, than a plate of Mun Fan (stewed rice)?

Sin Kee Restaurant in Brickfields used to be located in a wooden structure next to a petrol station along Jalan Tun Sambanthan. With progress and development, and the words KL Sentral whispered excitedly among the residents of Brickfields, Sin Kee moved to a shoplot across the road. Of late, there have been some positive refurbishments in Sin Kee. The restaurant now boasts a purple ceiling and orange lamps that create a warm and funky ambience to the otherwise old-fashioned chinese restaurant.

The members of the Makan Club have been patronising Sin Kee for over 10 years. We’ve tried almost everything on their menu, but the one thing we agree is the best in town is Sin Kee’s Seafood Mun Fan. Mun Fan is a one dish meal. Plain rice liberally topped with big fresh prawns, squids and sliced fishcake in a darkish sauce of onions, covering a fried omelette, and lettuce to complete the picture. We usually request for sliced lup cheong (chinese sausage) to be added to the dish to make it sinfully good. The flavours from the delectable seafood, lup cheong and caramelised onions work together perfectly to create a sweet and savoury meal.

This is comfort food at its best.

Very non-halal post – Meng Kee Char Siew, Glenmarie Shah Alam

I’ve constantly complained about the dearth of good eateries where I live, and have had to drive all the way to PJ/KL/Klang to get good food, or resort to eating something quicky put together at home. Thankfully, people like Boo_licious and Jackson have been blogging about food in Glenmarie, and I’ve suddenly realised that I will not die from an overdose of curry chee cheong fun and curry laksa, the only two meals in Glenmarie which I feel have been worth eating here, because we all know that too much of a good thing ain’t that good for ya.

So when I saw Boo’s blog on Meng Kee, I immediately made a phonecall to the Bald Eagle.

“Meng Kee’s in Glenmarie!!!”, I squealed.

Silence at the other end.

“Meng Kee!!”, I was jumping up and down at my end of the phone.

A couple of awkward seconds passed.

“Who’s Meng Kee?”, he asked.

“You mean what, dear. It’s the famous char siew place near Jalan Alor in KL.”

“Cool”, he responded in a nonchalant manner. “So when will you be buying me lunch?”

I hung up.

A couple of weeks passed, and I still hadn’t savoured Meng Kee’s char siew. Meng Kee is open at lunch time till about 5.00 in the evening, and is closed on Sundays. I work everyday. So naturally, our subsets did not match.

The stars finally aligned on Saturday. I had taken the day off to spend time with the guys (big Liverpool fans) who wanted to catch the Liverpool-Arsenal game, so for lunch, I decided to buy the famous Meng Kee char siew from Glenmarie. I trembled with excitement (but mostly hunger) as I watched the nice young man chop up the pieces of char siew very carefully and place them into little styrofoam boxes. They seemed quite concerned that the char siew may not be enough for me. I must have looked ravenous.

char siew

The char siew was glorious! Beautiful, sweet, glistening, pieces of charred meat with a layer of fat that added to the smoothness of the overall flavour. I couldn’t believe that something as wonderful as this could be found in my neighbourhood.

And the Bald Eagle? He was kissing my feet in gratitude.
