If it weren’t for Fatboybakes (FBB), I’d probably have no stories to tell you.  But we’re all fortunate to have our muses, although I’d gladly sell mine.  This limerick is my birthday gift to FBB!

There was a bakerman in Bangsar
Who professed to love eggs, toast and butter
But try as he might
He couldn’t fight
An urge to eat strangled goose liver.

“Macallan’s my spirit of choice!
And occasionally a double malt bliss
But feed me a Tiger
And you’ll definitely hear
My tuneless rendition of Les Mis!”

He parties all day and night
Surrounded by fans aplenty
But one stands out
His hairy chin stout
And winks to FBB, “Who’s your daddy?”

He’s a simple man, this baker from Bangsar
Who eats foie gras with his kopi
Tuna sashimi, yes please
Lobsters? With cheese!
And truffles and cakes with lotsa brandy!

“Yes, I’m a simple man, trust me, I am
My properties are just four and counting
I crave not a fortune
I’m almost a mormon
But touch my Blue Label and you’ll face a lynching”

So happy birthday, we bid thee, FBB
You’re a lucky one, we insist, FBB
Expensive presents abound
But how many will sound
As precious as this limerick, O FBB?

A couple of weeks ago, Bald Eagle and I celebrated our 8th wedding anniversary, and while to many of the young ones out there, we appear ancient, it’s amazing what a RM700 monthly visit to the hair salon can do for the greys.

He made reservations at Chinoz on the Park at KLCC, refurbished, shiny and new with an eye-candy of a chef with credentials to match.  I like the fact that Chef Haffizul Hashim came out often to speak with us.  Perhaps it was the benefit of having ordered a degustation menu?  I prefer to think it was my captivating smile or bald eagle’s shiny head, but I doubt if either made an impact on him.

The degustation menu consisted of 6 items (including dessert) which gave a good idea of what the restaurant served.  Our first course was such a delight to eat – a Cauliflower Veloute with Hokkaido Scallop and Truffles.  The veloute came in the form of a foam pumped out directly on our plates.  What I liked about the degustation menu was the way the chef had paired all the different ingredients to create a synergistic explosion of flavours.  It was not just the taste but the textures as well; the firmness of the scallop to the fizziness of the foam to the bits of crunch from the grainy sea salt…it was an appropriate opening allegro to this symphony.

As a symphony continues seamlessly, so did our subsequent dishes.  The Parsley Risotto, tinged in brilliant green, was served with sauteed escargots.  The risotto was creamy but hinted very little of parsley.  We marvelled at the next dish, the Grilled Brittany Turbot with Citrus Fruits and Etuve of Asparagus.  It was an explosion of colours, cheery and bright – food should be like this, a treat to all the senses.  Prized for its firm, white flesh, the turbot was complemented with a tangy sweet sauce made from blood oranges and other citrusy fruits.  We loved this dish, but at RM128 for 180g on the ala carte menu, we shall probably reserve this order for special occasions.

The Roasted Duck Breast and Pan Fried Foie Gras, Glazed Figs & Beetroot Puree was a more subdued visual affair, but didn’t lack in the taste department.  The duck breast, still pink and firm, was a good match with the melt-in-your-mouth foie gras.  The last time I had fresh figs was in the UK where I holidayed last year, and so eating this brought me back to that evening in Bath where I laughed over scones and fresh fruit with my dear friend, Msiagirl.  Like all the other dishes, this one didn’t disappoint due to the excellent matching of flavours by the chef.

Desserts were in two parts – a Mango Ravioli with Lime Sorbet, light, citrusy and sweet – very refreshing, while the finale was a Chocolate Parfait with Tuile and Peanut Butter Ice Cream.

My experience was only marred by the restaurant settings, where we were led to a beautifully arranged table with the right forks and knives and wine glasses, but lacked the formal atmosphere one would expect when one pays RM180++ per person for a meal.  Beside us, a family was dining (complete with pram and baby), and although I have no objections under normal circumstances, the view didn’t do much for romance!  Perhaps the restaurant was attempting to achieve too much in wanting to have its cake and eat it too.  It’s hard to have both a cafe and a fine dining restaurant under the same roof without having a clear demarcation of space (and that includes soundproofing as well!).

It’s funny how after being together for so long, I thought I’d figured Bald Eagle out and that I knew him well, but well, I didn’t.  But that makes it more fun, doesn’t it?  “We are going to KLCC,” he had said.  What??  Our 8th anniversary and he’s bringing me to a place I see everyday?  For a brief second (and it was a tiny micro-bit of a second), I wished I had joined FBB’s soiree at Nikko Hotel instead.  At least I could get all dolled up (with my most excellent Shu Uemura fake eyelashes) for the event there.

But I was wrong.

Because the food was amazing that night….

He works hard for the money
So hard for it honey
He works hard for the money
So you better treat him right!

Times are bad.  Bald Eagle now has to resort to armwrestling to earn us a free meal. (Which he successfuly did! Woohoooo! He da man!)

Okay.  The truth is, it was an Oktoberfest weekend at Euro Deli Grill, the Swiss-German restaurant where we celebrated Father-in-Law’s birthday, and instead of the normally quiet and slightly more dignified atmosphere, the place had come alive with loud music and games.  They had armwrestling for women too.  MIL and I took part, but I was whipped in the first round by a european lady who definitely ate more red meat than me.  *grunt*  Oh MIL did better.  All that exercise from housework showed as she breezed into the semis only to be knocked out by…yeah…another european lady who definitely ate more red meat than both of us put together.  Bald Eagle avenged our loss by thrashing a Norwegian twice his size.  Then again, Norwegians eat fish, don’t they?  (I take liberties in saying this ‘coz I LOVE Norwegians (yes you, Gard, and you, Olav) and I know that they know that I’m just joking…don’t hit me with that sardine can!!)

It’s interesting, though, that Bald Eagle chose this restaurant to celebrate his father’s birthday knowing full well that his mother is averse to pork.  Then again, blood is thicker than water, I say, so stay clear of the action and party on.

*smile*

The food at Euro Deli is far from pretentious.  Not much goes into the presentation, but hey, in a place like this, I’d choose hearty, wholesome and satisfying over presentation anytime.  Throw in a Paulaner, please, while you’re at it.  With a menu that consists predominantly of pork dishes, there is an amazing selection of sausages (farmers, nuernberger, emmenthaler (swiss cheese?), etc), pastas and grills.  And German beers, of course.  My Butcher Plate came with a thick slice of Kassler ham (a type of smoked ham), sausage and knuckle served on a bed of delicious sauerkraut and mashed potatoes.  The pork knuckle was very crispy and crunchy, and the meat tender.  Like all german style pork knuckles, it was rather salty, but paired with the sauerkraut, it was just nice.  The salmon steak, served with a lemon butter sauce, was simple and hardly exciting, but MIL gave it her vote of approval, so I guess it’s worth a try if you’re not into pork.  Prices are in the twenties and thirties generally.  Very reasonable.

Service was good and personable.  A nice place to dine at if you’re in the mood to be loud.  Beer does that to you anyway. There’s also a great view of the Twin Towers if you’re into that sort of thing. Ample parking is available.

Birthday dinner at Max! Kitchen & Wines – Degustation Menu

I turned 29 on Monday.Uhuh.

Bald Eagle called me on Monday afternoon with a simple message. “Meet me at Max’s at 8.15pm.” I was elated!

I knew it would be no simple dinner. When a chef is given a free rein over the menu, one can expect only the best.

It was a 10-course meal that was designed to please.

feta cheese and tomatoes smoked salmon and spanish octopus Beef bresola

Our first course of smoked salmon came with feta cheese and tomatoes on a bed of chopped spanish octopus, drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I love how Max combined the different ingredients to create interesting flavours. The combination of salty, pungent, sweet and sour with the different textures was amazing. The second course of beef bresola (thin slices of cured, seasoned beef) was served together with mushrooms and sundried tomatoes in olive oil. Again, the combination of flavours were wonderful and I felt a sense of excitement, almost like opening christmas presents to see what Santa (in this case, Max) had put into my Christmas stocking!

scallop with sundried tuna on pesto sauce and scallop with pernod sauce

scallops tuna loin wrapped with spanish chilli yabby

The third course was undoubtedly Bald Eagle’s favourite dish. The dish was creatively presented; one scallop, lightly grilled, with a sliver of sundried tuna inserted into it, and served with pesto sauce, and the other scallop served with pernod sauce with chopped vegetables. It was a difficult task deciding which one I preferred between the two, and really, there wasn’t any reason to choose one, was there?

The fourth course was my favourite. Tuna loin wrapped in spanish chili with tomato clam sauce. The tuna loin was lightly seared so it was cooked on the outside while the inside was still red and juicy. It was my first time trying the spanish chili and I loved the intense sour taste (from the pickling) which combined well with the tuna. I wouldn’t have thought that a creamy sauce would have gone well with the tart flavour of the chili, but I was pleasantly surprised at how easily the flavours blended with each other.

The grilled yabby was laced with old sherry which again, lent a slightly tart flavour to the dish. I would have loved to try more of it as there was only so much flesh in one yabby. Maybe next time.

smoked duck chicken breast grilled lamb

There was more meat to chew on in the sixth course – smoked duck with yellow oyster mushrooms. The meat was not tough, as how duck sometimes tends to be. The seventh course of chicken breast was served with stewed vegetables – I remember eating bellpeppers and tomatoes – and this was served with a lovely garlicky sauce. The vampires would have stayed away from me. At this point, I was beginning to feel rather bloated, but like a woman in lust, I was unable to say “stop”. And so the waiters brought out the eighth course – grilled lamb with cannellini beans. The beans are similar in size to kidney beans, but they are white in colour and a popular ingredient in Italian cuisine.

And then came out the ninth course. The dish that made me weep tears of happiness. Wagyu beef cheeks served on mashed potatoes. Simply divine.

chocolate souffle, kataifi pastry and vanilla ice cream chocolate souffle birthday cake

The final course was the dessert which consisted of warm chocolate souffle, kataifi pastry and lovely vanilla icecream. I amazed myself by finishing up everything. I suppose one doesn’t have to try very hard when there’s good food around!

And to top it all off, what’s a birthday without a birthday cake eh? (courtesy of Max)
