Queen’s Hotel, Peel Road – Sup kambing and Satay

Sup kambing

He lifted the cover of the huge metal pot to scoop up the soup with a wooden spoon that had seen better times.  His appearance matched his possessions.  His hands were gnarled, veins apparent, and a huge silver ring enveloped his ring finger.  The chopping board was a thick slab of serrated wood, the centre indented from the massive amount of destruction caused by the chopping knife.   But for the moment, nothing mattered except for the aroma of spices and bones emanating from the pot.  Mohd Jhabar’s sup kambing is a hearty broth that is enough to revive the engine, and the aroma is enough to revive the spirits.  The mutton pieces, five in each bowl, are tender enough to tear off from the bones without much effort.  Open daily except Mondays, his stall stays open from 3.30 in the afternoon until everything’s finished.

Queen’s Hotel, located at the corner of Jalan Peel and Jalan Shelly, houses several stalls with a variety of food.  From delicious chicken wings to curry noodles, this place is extremely popular, and getting an empty table can be a challenge.  Satay is another favourite, and it’s easy to see why.  I love the slightly charred pieces of skewered meat.  Only 50 sen per stick.

Have you ever experienced snippets in time when the Federal Highway in your life feels like an Autobahn?  When you want 80km/h, but life deals you 200?  When you pace yourself at work to meet your deadlines, and all at once, everybody wants things “today”?  When you trudge along in friendship, but the other party deals you a Go Straight To Jail, Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect $200 card?  When you tell yourself that you’ll mail those Chinese New Year cards out tomorrow, only to find that tomorrow’s Chinese New Year?

Tomorrow’s Chinese New Year, and I have yet to mail those darned cards.

Yes, I need simplicity.

A bowl of curry mee, oozing with the richness of coconut milk in a thick red curry, silky smooth steamed chicken soaking in the spicy broth, and barely cooked cockles…..those wonderful juicy cockles.

I feel better now.

Duck Noodles at Chun Heong, Lucky Garden, KL

duck noodles

Happiness is eating a simple bowl of noodles tossed in some dark sauce.

Happiness is slurping double-boiled soup flavoured with chinese herbs. Tender duck meat that literally falls off the bones saturates the soup with its essence.

duck noodles

Happiness is watching the steam fog up my glasses as I slurp up my noodles. The simplicity of which it is prepared, with just a sprinkling of chopped spring onions and sliced garlic, is a contrast to the complexity of its taste. Wolfberries add a natural sweetness to the taste of the soup.

Iced Milo

Happiness is ending the meal with a glass of Iced Milo (extra kau, of course).
